Museum-quality or conservation glass filters out the vast majority of UV rays and is widely available from professional framers.
Choose acid-free matting and backing materials. Acidic materials can yellow and damage paper over time. A professional framer will be familiar with these requirements and can advise you on the best options for your portrait's size and style.
Where to Display Your Portrait
Choose a location away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and significant temperature fluctuations. Avoid hanging your portrait directly above a radiator, fireplace, or in a bathroom. A living room, bedroom, or hallway with stable conditions is ideal.
Indirect natural light is beautiful for displaying watercolor art — it brings out the luminosity of the pigments without the damaging effects of direct sun exposure.
Handling Your Portrait
If you need to handle the unframed painting, do so with clean, dry hands — or better still, cotton gloves. Oils from skin can transfer to paper and cause long-term damage. Hold the painting by its edges rather than touching the painted surface.
